Music enjoys a high profile within the school. All students are given the opportunity to express themselves in the performing arts. We have a variety of different performance groups for students to join:
- Hilliard State School Beginner Band
- Hilliard State School Senior Band
- Hilliard State School Choir
- Hilliard State School Percussion Ensemble
Both Beginner and Senior Band are part of Education Queensland curriculum and is assessed and reported on within the school year. Choir and Percussion Ensemble are extra-curricular with no assessment or reporting.
Some programs are free, whilst others have modest fees for participation. Please check the relevant documents for further information.
Our instrumental music programme begins with Beginner Band in Year Four. Students are tested in Year Three to ascertain musical aptitude and instrument suitability. The students have half hour lessons culminating with a full band rehearsal once a week. Beginner Band students are expected to attend the regional Beginner Band Week which is a day camp designed to introduce students to band rehearsal procedure, sectional rehearsal, and performance technique.
Students continuing with the program can then choose to continue on to Senior Band in Year Five and Six. Weekly lessons continue for Senior students with a band rehearsal once a week. Senior students may attend the regional Intermediate Band Camp, which seeks to further the student’s musicals skills during an intensive week of rehearsal, activities and performances.
Students from Prep to Year Six can join Choir. Students have one rehearsal a week (no lessons). The students learn how their voice works, warm-up exercises, and vocal technique. Choir perform songs from a variety of styles and eras.
Percussion Ensemble is open to students from Year Three to Six. Due to the nature of the ensemble, there are only thirteen places available for students. There is one rehearsal a week (no lessons). All instruments are supplied, but many students like to bring their own drumsticks. Students learn how to read music, correct stick technique, how to play a multitude of percussion instruments, and how to play within an ensemble.
All music groups wear the same uniform. The uniform is an important part of performance and is required whenever any music group is performing. The uniform consists of:
- The new Hilliard State School polo
- Long black pants
- Black shoes
- White or black socks
- Neat hair, with long hair off the face using dark blue or black ties.
