Music enjoys a high profile within the school. All students are given the opportunity to express themselves in the performing arts. We have a variety of different performance groups for students to join:
- Hilliard State School Band
- Hilliard State School Choir
Both Beginner and Senior Band are part of Education Queensland curriculum and is assessed and reported on within the school year. Choir and Percussion Ensemble are extra-curricular with no assessment or reporting.
Some programs are free, whilst others have modest fees for participation. Please check the relevant documents for further information.
Instrumental Music
Our instrumental music program gives students in Years 4-6 an opportunity to learn a band (woodwind, brass or percussion) instrument. There are three components of the program: group lessons, band rehearsals and home practice. Lessons are during class time for 30 minutes each week. Students also attend band rehearsals held before school for 1 hour each week. All students pay an annual levy to participate in the program. Woodwind and brass instruments are available to hire for the first year of instruction with the option to hire larger instruments for the whole duration of study until graduation.
Beginner students are expected to attend the regional Beginner Band Week which is a day camp designed to introduce students to band rehearsal procedure, sectional rehearsal and performance technique. Continuing students may attend the Level 2 and Level 3 band workshops, which seeks to further musical skills. Advanced students may also be invited to the Regional Music Camp.
Choir
Students from Prep to Year Six can join Choir. Students have one rehearsal a week (no lessons). The students learn how their voice works, warm-up exercises, and vocal technique. Choir perform songs from a variety of styles and eras. Choir is now a part of the Hilliard SS clubs.
Music Uniform
All music groups wear the same uniform. The uniform is an important part of performance and is required whenever any music group is performing. The uniform consists of:
- The new Hilliard State School polo
- Long black pants
- Black shoes
- White or black socks
- Neat hair, with long hair off the face using dark blue or black ties.
